The Nourishing Traditions Diet

Probiotic Therapy

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help us stay well. They include Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifido bacteria. These bacteria, which are found in high quality yogurt (not the kind with fruit and sugar in it) and kefir, were first identified about 200 years ago. They help by crowding out candida and other bad bacteria and may also help heal the leaky gut and prevent the absorption of food allergens. They also manufacture some of the B vitamins and the milk-digesting enzyme, lactase. These various functions, which include both protective and therapeutic roles, help explain why the word "probiotic" was coined, since it means "for life."

Many people with fibromyalgia have low levels of good bacteria in their gut due to over-use of antibiotics and other medications.

Magnesium Supplementation

Low thyroid will cause the loss of magnesium. Additional salt in the diet may be helpful because it helps to prevent urinary magnesium loss. People with Candida overgrowth are more likely to be low on magnesium. Magnesium is not absorbed well when the intestines are irritated.

Your Daily Chart

As your symptoms improve and you get feeling better, it is often difficult to remember how bad you felt before!    We recommend keeping a journal of your symptoms and pain levels so you can compare how you feel today with what you were experiencing days, weeks, or months ago.   You can make copies of this daily chart to track your treatment and recovery.
